Athirapally waterfalls is the most beautiful waterfall in Kerala, India and is also known to be the Indian Niagara falls. During the monsoon season, it looks awesome. This is one of the waterfalls you don’t want to miss while visiting India or Kerala. People call this place as Athirapally, Athirampally, Athirappilly or Athirampilly. When taking the top ten Indian waterfalls Athirapally waterfalls will definitely take a place with another one taking the list, the Dudhsagar waterfalls in Goa.
There is an entry fee for accessing the waterfall which is cheap when compared to other tourist spots and there is a separate fee for the camera, film shooting, etc. There are two paths leading to the fall. One path leads to the top side and the other path leads to the bottom side of the waterfalls. To reach the base of the waterfalls, one needs to climb down the steep path of 1 km. On the way to the waterfall, you can hear the roaring sound of the water from the fall which makes us more exciting as we are nearing the waterfall.
The top side has a fence covering the edge of the steep mountain and from there you can view the beauty of the waterfall. You will love to take bath along the water flow path on the top side of the waterfall. If the flow of the water is very fast then you will not be allowed to take bath. The cloud in the sky and the fog of the water form the mesmerizing view of the waterfall. You can see such a view during the monsoon season. When the waterfalls reach the base portion it gets connected to the Chalakkudi river. If you climb over the rocks at the bottom side of the waterfall, you can feel the splashes of the waterfall which is very nice to feel.
Films shot at Athirapally waterfalls
This is the place that the Indian film directors chose most often for the songs in their films. The recent and the most famous Bahubali film was shot at this location. We cannot count the films shot here. Most of the song sequences of the film featuring the waterfalls as backgrounds will be shot here. The other famous films shot here were Ravan – Kidnap and imprison scene, Dil se – Jiya Jale song, Punnagai Mannan – Suicide scene, SuryaVamsam – Rosapoo Song, Iruvar – Narumugaiye Song, Mudhalvan – Kurukku Siruthavale Song and more.
How to reach Athirapally waterfalls by train/ bus/ car/ air
Cochin and Thrissur are the main cities which are near to the destination. Either you can head to Thrissur or Kochi to reach the place.
The nearest airport to Athirampilly falls is Cochin international airport. You can take a cab from the airport itself. UberHire is the cheap and better option if you have an uber app installed on your smartphone.
The nearest railway station is Chalakkudy. But most of the trains don’t have a stop at this railway station. If you alight at Chalakkudy railway station then you can head to the Chalakkudy KSRTC bus stand which is at a distance of 2km. From there you can get the buses to Athirapally falls within a gap of every 30 minutes.
The main railway station which is close to Athirapally waterfalls is Thrissur railway station. From there you can catch a train to Chalakkudy and follow the above procedure, or you can head to the Thrissur KSRTC bus stand which is just 450m from the railway station. From there you can get the buses to Chalakkudy KSRTC stand and catch the Athirapally falls bus.

Advice for Visitors
- You should be very careful walking along the rocks in the waterfall especially if you have kids with you.
- The top side of the waterfalls has edges of the steep mountain covered with temporary fences. Don’t hold or go too close to it.
- There would be parking problem during the season time
- There are many monkeys along the way, keep your belongings safe
- While taking bath don’t ever go too deep into the water.
